Entergy Statement on Nuclear Regulatory Commission's $650,000 Proposed Fine

Buchanan, N.Y. – Entergy regrets the problems that repeatedly have arisen with the new, state-of-the-art alert system it has been designing, installing and testing for communities around the Indian Point Energy Center. We apologize to our neighbors in those communities for the delays that have occurred in making this new system operable.

The missed deadlines have been taken most seriously and the $650,000 fine the Nuclear Regulatory Commission levied is 10 times larger than the base-level fine the NRC could issue in a case such as this. We are working with the four counties surrounding Indian Point, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the NRC to ensure that the remaining issues will be resolved and the system approved by FEMA as quickly as possible.

It is important to understand that throughout this whole period, public health and safety have never been in any way jeopardized. As the NRC notice acknowledges, the original siren system remains in place and continues to be fully operable and capable of providing the necessary public warning should any emergency occur.

Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, N.Y. is home to two 4-loop Westinghouse nuclear reactors that generate 2140 megawatts for customers in Westchester County and New York City.
