Quarterly siren test this Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Entergy Nuclear will conduct a test of the emergency notification sirens surrounding Indian Point Energy Center on Wednesday, September 24, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. All sirens in the new system will be tested simultaneously at full-volume for four minutes in Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam counties. WHUD Radio (100.7 FM) will perform a test of the Emergency Alert System immediately after the test. This will be the first test of the new siren system since it was placed into service in August.
THIS TEST REQUIRES NO RESPONSE ON THE PART OF THE PUBLIC.
Entergy performs periodic tests to ensure each siren's operability, as required by Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) guidelines. The 172 sirens are located in a 10-mile emergency planning zone surrounding Indian Point, including 77 in Westchester; 56 in Rockland; 23 in Orange; 16 in Putnam County.
During an emergency at Indian Point, the counties would sound all 172 sirens simultaneously for four minutes at full volume, alerting the public to listen to Emergency Alert System broadcasts on local radio or television stations for further information and instructions. Sounding the sirens is a signal for residents to listen to EAS broadcasts for important information. It is NOT a signal to evacuate.
The EAS message broadcast also would activate tone alert radios located at pre-designated facilities.
EAS radio and television stations are listed in the booklet "Community Emergency Planning for Indian Point: A Guide for You and Your Family," which is mailed to households located within 10 miles of Indian Point. Booklets are available through your local county emergency management office.
