Indian Point was designed and built with high levels of safety precautions and the company is continually adding new layers to enhance its safety. Indian Point has invested more than $1.3 billion to upgrade and strengthen these plants in recent years. In accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations, Entergy will continue to make all the necessary investments to ensure the continued safety of Indian Point.
Indian Point has highly restricted access that is controlled by state-of-the-art security systems. The plants and property are protected by a rigorously trained security force, multiple vehicle barriers, fencing with razor wire, closed-circuit television surveillance and additional protective measures.
Indian Point is one of the most thoroughly reviewed nuclear energy facilities in the United States. Indian Point has multiple independent federal inspectors from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on-site overseeing the plant’s safe operations. In fact, the law guarantees these inspectors access to any document, any employee or any portion of the facility. That’s accountability in action, every day, all the time.
Indian Point provides clean, reliable electricity to millions of homes and businesses. About a quarter of the electricity in New York City and Westchester is generated by Indian Point. Since Entergy purchased the plants, performance and reliability have increased markedly from around 60 percent under prior owners to greater than 90 percent.
Indian Point contributes more than $30 million in annual payments in lieu of taxes.
Indian Point employs approximately 1,000 full-time workers, providing $140 million in annual payroll. The annual economic impact of that payroll combined with local purchases is approximately $356 million. In addition, each year about 1,000 contractors supplement our workforce during a month-long refueling and maintenance outage.
Entergy is a proud supporter of important charitable and other organizations in the region. Indian Point contributes $1 million in charitable contributions annually.
