Brief Fire Causes Shutdown of Indian Point 3

April 6, 2007

Buchanan, New York- A brief fire in the unit 3 transformer yard at the Indian Point Entergy Center Entergy caused the shutdown of the unit 3 plant and led to a declaration of a Notice of Unusual Event at approximately 11:43a.m., today. The plant's fire brigade extinguished the fire, and at 12:47 the NUE was terminated.

The plant is shut down and in stable condition. There was no release of radiation to the environment as a result of the event.

There were no injuries, and all safety systems are operable.

The plant was operating at about 90% power, after returning Wednesday from a brief shutdown because of a problem with one of the plant's two main boiler feed pumps, when the Unusual Event was declared.

Indian Point Unit 2 nuclear power plant continues to operate at 100% power.

In accordance with federal regulations and emergency plant procedures, appropriate government agencies have been notified, including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and state, county, and local officials. An Unusual Event is the lowest of four emergency classifications for U.S. nuclear power plants, as outlined by the NRC.
