Control Room Operators Safely Restart IP2

March 2, 2006

Buchanan, New York—Entergy control room operators safely returned the Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant to service today after shutting down the plant yesterday when control rods automatically inserted into the nuclear reactor. Control rods are used to reduce power in the reactor and shut down the plant.

Yesterday's shutdown occurred when a carpenter unintentionally bumped a switch, cutting off electrical power to 12 control rods which inserted into the reactor as designed. The reactor has 53 control rods in total that are held in place electromagnetically above the reactor. Operators inserted the remaining control rods to shut down the plant in accordance with procedures. There was no release of radioactivity or damage to equipment.

Before yesterday's shutdown, the plant had been operating continuously for 69 days since Dec. 24, 2005, when it was returned to service after a two-day shutdown to repair a valve on the non-radioactive side of the plant that could not be worked on while the plant is operating.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local public officials were notified.

Indian Point 3 is operating at full power.
