Indian Point’s Unit 2 Placed Back in Operation

Plant Completes 23 Day Outage to Refuel

March 19, 2014

Buchanan – Control room operators at Indian Point Energy Center returned Unit 2 to operation on Wednesday afternoon, sending electricity to the grid. This follows a twenty-three day period during which unit 2 was shut down for a scheduled refueling outage.

About 1,000 additional highly skilled contract employees supplemented Entergy’s normal workforce of more than 1,000 employees to add new fuel and perform thousands of maintenance activities, tests, and inspections on equipment at unit 2 during the outage.

“Indian Point unit 2 is ready to continue to safely generate more than 1,000 megawatts of clean electricity for New Yorkers thanks to the 2,000 highly trained workers who performed thousands of maintenance activities and inspections during the outage,” said John Ventosa, site vice president and Entergy’s top official at Indian Point.

Prior to this refueling outage, unit 2 had been online generating electricity for more than 16,500 hours – or more than 99 percent of the time – since it returned to service from its previous refueling outage in April 2012.

Unit 3, which completed its last refueling outage in March 2013, continues to operate at full power, generating about 1,000 megawatts of electricity – enough to power about one million homes.

Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2000 megawatts of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.

Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including more than 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power, making it one of the nation’s leading nuclear generators. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.8 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $11 billion and approximately 14,000 employees.
