Indian Point 3 Nuclear Power Plant Shut Down
August 28, 2009

Buchanan, N.Y. - Indian Point's unit 3 nuclear power plant automatically shut down last night due to a leak in a pipe that carries oil in the turbine protection system.

There was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of workers or the public. The plant will be returned to service when workers complete repairs to the pipe within a couple of days.

All equipment responding to the shutdown performed as designed. During normal operation steam passing across the turbine blades causes a shaft inside the generator to spin and create electricity.

Unit 2 is currently operating at 100‰ and has been online for 147 continuous days. Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2000 megawatts of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
