Entergy Plans Maintenance Shutdown of Indian Point 3 Nuclear Power Plant

BUCHANAN, N.Y.– Control room operators will remove Indian Point’s unit 3 nuclear power plant from service this evening in order to repair a leak from a pipe that carries nonradioactive river water to the plant. The river water contained in the pipe is used to cool components in the turbine building, located on the non-nuclear side of the plant.

The pipe leak is located outdoors between the river and the building that houses the turbines and generator.

Unit 3 has been online for 163 continuous days of operation.

Unit 2 is operating at full power and has been online for 91 continuous days.

Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity for homes, businesses and public facilities primarily in New York City and Westchester County.
