2007–2008 Emergency Planning Booklet and Maps
In Case of Emergency
The Indian Point plants are designed with redundant safety
systems and multiple components to prevent accidents. An accident
that would involve the public is unlikely.
Many of the safety features were added to the plants after
the event at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in the 1970s.
If there were to be an event at the Indian Point site, the
public would be informed immediately through the news media
and kept apprised of developments, under federal regulations
and supervision by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
In the extremely unlikely event that would require a response
from the public, state and county emergency officials would
make recommendations regarding sheltering or evacuation through
the news media and Emergency Broadcast System.
Expert Planning
The staffs at the Indian Point plants are fully trained and
prepared to respond to any possible scenario involving plant
operations. They use explicit, detailed procedures that have
been reviewed extensively.
Under Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements and supervision,
the staffs conduct several plant-wide drills each year to
test their response.
The drills frequently involve emergency planning officials
and public safety agencies from the four surrounding counties
and the state. They follow set procedures to monitor plant
conditions and make recommendations to the public under drill
scenarios. These drills are supervised by the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
In the event of an accident, the news media and public would
be kept fully informed of developments, under procedures established
by federal regulations. The dissemination of information is
part of the drills.
A system of emergency sirens is set up in areas surrounding
the plant. The sirens are tested regularly. They would warn
the public in the event of an accident.
Through the mail, Indian Point Energy Center supplies each
resident of the four-county area around the plant with a set
of procedures to follow in case of an emergency.
Indian Point is an important part of the areas overall
emergency planning process and is an active partner in assisting
all involved parties (such as area hospitals and local Red
Cross chapters) with the program.
