Letter to "The Daily News"
May 10, 2006
To the Editor:
I am writing in response to the Daily News article on Oct. 9 regarding the Indian Point Energy Center and the center's operator, Entergy Nuclear Northeast. The article is misleading and replete with errors when it describes a radioactive water leak that was reported by Entergy in 2005 and says "the size of the problem continues to grow."
While Entergy regrets these leaks occurred, the fact is that Entergy acted immediately to address this problem more than a year ago and has gone to great lengths to reduce and eradicate its effects. As a result, Entergy has managed to significantly reduce the amount of radioactive material at the source or block it completely.
Further, Entergy has shown that the leak is largely contained in a relatively small area within the Indian Point site. In fact, the amount reaching the Hudson River is less than one-tenth of one percent of the annual regulatory permitted limits. Most importantly, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission - along with local and state health agencies - has said the leaks have had no effect on and do not threaten public health.
Entergy is committed to ensuring the safety of both the residents in the surrounding four county regions and its employees. We will continue to do what is necessary to live up to that responsibility.
Sincerely,
Jim Steets
Manager of External Communications
